The importance of a structured consultation process
We’ve all been there. A client sits in your chair, shows you an Instagram photo that is worlds away from their current hair history, and says, “I want this, but low maintenance.”
In that moment, you aren't just a stylist; you’re a negotiator. How you handle those first ten minutes determines not only the result of the hair but the longevity of that client relationship.
With the release of the 2nd Edition of Elements, the industry now has a definitive blueprint for success. While many see it as the gold standard for technical excellence, it is actually a holistic deep-dive into our craft—covering everything from the science of color theory and the history of fashion to social media strategy. Crucially, it includes a dedicated, comprehensive section on the consultation process, proving that the "talk" is just as vital as the "technique."
Many stylists treat the consultation like a casual chat. While being personable is great, a structured process is what builds trust. When you follow a consistent framework, you move from being a "service provider" to a "trusted advisor." The consultation is an opportunity to make a connection with your client and really listen to understand and make your client feel heard and seen.
A structured consultation allows you to:
Manage Expectations: Under-promise and over-deliver by being honest about what is achievable in one session.
Identify Hair Integrity: Use a systematic approach to check hair health before the first drop of color touches the bowl.
Uncover Hidden Needs: By asking the right questions, you find out they aren't just bored with their color—they’re struggling with frizz or thinning, opening the door for add-on treatments.
The consultation is the highest-leverage part of the appointment. It is where retail sales and rebooking rates are won or lost.
If you wait until the client is at the front desk to suggest a shampoo, it feels like a "sales pitch." If you discuss their home-care needs during the consultation as part of their "hair plan," it feels like professional advice. Stop asking "What are we doing today?" and start asking "What is the biggest challenge you’re having with your hair right now?" The answer to that question is your roadmap to increased revenue through targeted treatments and retail solutions. In today's economy it's vital that we use every opportunity to be as thorough as possible by really understanding our client's needs, so that we can give comprehensive advice and offer solutions.
Elements lays the complete foundation — from colour theory to consultation — and my work takes the dialogue deeper, exploring the psychology and scripts that turn that knowledge into revenue.
By pairing world-class technical training with a bulletproof consultation process, you aren't just doing hair—you’re building a career.
