The most important service you provide

The value of a consultation with your client cannot be underestimated: it is during this time that your client will try to convey to you what they want you to do with their hair; and it is your responsibility to listen to what they are saying and give feedback, which may involve re-affirming what they have requested or offering alternative, more creative approaches. In order to communicate effectively with your clients during a consultation, you will need to understand an extensive range of terminology. From specific hair styles to simple, advanced and more creative techniques, you will need to instil confidence in your client that you are an expert in your field and that they are in safe hands with you.

Great leaders, politicians and presidents all know about the power of words: the language they use can inspire nations and create faithful supporters. They have amazing writers, but, above all, it is the way they deliver the words with passion and charisma that truly attracts and engages people.

Charisma is the compelling attractiveness or warm charm that can inspire devotion in others. It is a quality attributed to some of the world’s most attractive and influential people - and it has almost become an art form in itself as so many people try to emulate and exude this quality.

In the film ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’, the extraordinary growth of Jordan Belfort’s compelling company is a direct result of training his staff in dialogue and how to use words effectively to get people’s attention and gain people’s trust. Acclaimed motivational speaker and entrepreneur Tony Robbins refers to this as “transformational vocabulary”.

Transformational vocabulary is about how you can take control of your vocabulary to change the quality of your life. Simply by changing your vocabulary - the words you consistently use to describe the emotions of your life - you can instantly change how you think, feel and how you live.

Being mindful of your choice of words and the way you deliver them is a crucial part of your role as a hairdresser. You will need to advise, reassure and share your professional opinion with your client during the consultation and you need to be on top of your game. Developing an awareness about the power of words coupled with learning to express yourself in a confident, charismatic and passionate manner can positively influence the way you communicate with your client. This skill is priceless and will be used every day in your career as a hairdresser.
